Question One

What Is Black Sand?

Black sand is a mix of minerals far denser and heavier than the ordinary sand around them. The two you will see most are magnetite and hematite.

Magnetite makes up most of it, and hematite most of the rest. The difference that matters: magnetite is magnetic, hematite is not.

About 90% of your black sand is magnetite, and magnetite answers to a magnet.

Question Two

Why Is It In Your Pan?

Ordinary sand is only 2 to 2.5 times heavier than water, so a moving stream carries it along easily. Wherever the water goes, the sand goes.

Black sand is 5 to 5.5 times heavier than water. The current struggles to move it, so it drops into crevices, behind rocks and logs, and on the inside of bends, just like gold.

The places you learn to dig for gold are the same places black sand collects.

Question Three

How Do You Remove It?

For nearly 150 years, prospectors have talked about black sand more than any subject but gold itself. It is heavy, it hides the color, and it sits at the bottom of the pan right where the gold is.

Because it is mostly magnetite, a strong magnet lifts the bulk of it out in a single pass. No swirling, no guesswork.
